Street Interviewer (Contract)
About Shinzo Matcha
Matcha is one of the fastest-growing functional beverage subcategories. Most cafés added a matcha option in the past few years, to the point where it's odd if a café doesn't offer matcha. Shinzo is making matcha more accessible through ready-to-drink sparkling matchas and single-serve matcha pouches, designed for the rapidly growing crowd switching to matcha for smooth, steady energy.
We are an early-stage, founder-led brand in stores nationwide and growing quickly. New York City is one of our most important markets, and the people we bring on now will help shape how Shinzo shows up here — including on camera.
The Role
The Street Interviewer films on-the-street video for Shinzo. You work NYC sidewalks, parks, campuses, and high-traffic corners, stop people in the flow of their day, get them talking on camera, and come back with clips we can actually post.
This is not journalism, press, or a research study. It is not a clipboard survey. We need someone who can read a block, earn a stranger's attention in a few seconds, and run an interview that feels fun to watch. Personality, pacing, and usable footage matter more than a perfect questionnaire.
Street Interviewers operate as independent contractors and work directly with the founding team.
Responsibilities
1. Street Interviews
- Approach people in high-traffic NYC neighborhoods and get them comfortable on camera.
- Run short, energetic interviews about matcha, coffee, energy drinks, and what they drink day to day.
- Keep the conversation natural and watchable. This should feel like content, not a pitch or a poll.
- Know when to keep rolling, when to recast a question, and when to wrap.
2. Filming
- Film short, social-ready interview clips on a phone or provided camera.
- Get clear consent before recording, and do not film anyone who does not want to be on camera.
- Capture clean audio, usable framing, and a mix of quick reactions and longer takes.
- Work the location: lighting, background, crowd energy, and anything that makes the clip better on a phone screen.
3. Footage Delivery
- Deliver organized, labeled footage after each session, typically within 24-48 hours.
- Flag the strongest clips so they are easy to find in the edit.
- Note anything that would help cut the video, like which takes to skip and which lines landed.
Schedule Expectations
- Availability for weekday lunches, evenings, and weekends, when sidewalks are busiest.
- Approximately 6-10 sessions per month during peak season. Sessions typically run 2-4 hours.
- Weather-aware planning, plus reasonable advance notice for any scheduling changes.
Who We Are Looking For
- Prior experience filming street interviews, UGC, social content, or other on-the-street video.
- Comfortable approaching strangers in NYC and getting them talking on camera without it feeling like a hard sell.
- A natural on-camera host. We want energy and taste, not a stiff interviewer.
- Organized enough to manage footage, consent, and file delivery without being chased.
- A self-starter who takes ownership and does not need to be managed closely day-to-day.
- A good eye for what works on social, and genuine interest in food, drink, and city culture.
Compensation
- Hourly rate commensurate with experience ($17-28/hr) and travel reimbursement.
- Performance-based bonus for standout footage and consistently hitting session targets. Details to be discussed.
Future Opportunities
This role is designed to evolve. As our NYC video work grows, strong performers will be considered for more sessions, more shooting days, helping other interviewers, and corresponding compensation increases.
